Overview
As part of LivGreen’s ongoing commitment to delivering measurable social value alongside our retrofit work, we partnered with Hafod to support two major community initiatives in line with our Social Value pledge. These activities formed part of the Hafod Social Value Project Fund, a £1,000 contribution from LivGreen, allocated across two environmental community events designed to strengthen community spirit, improve local environments, and support residents with practical resources.
1. Background & Funding Allocation
LivGreen’s Social Value Lead met with Hafod’s Community Engagement Manager to review and confirm available funding options. To ensure that the funding reached the communities that needed it most, Hafod launched an internal bid competition.
Community Managers across Hafod were invited to submit proposals detailing how they would use their £500 allocation. Two regions were selected, each working closely with LivGreen to plan and deliver a community-focused event:
-
Event 1: The Big Clean-Up – 30 October 2025
-
Event 2: Recycling Support & Afternoon Tea – 12 November 2025
Overview
Following the success of The Big Clean-Up, LivGreen continued its commitment to Hafod’s Social Value programme by supporting a second community initiative focused on recycling education and resident wellbeing. With a further £500 allocated from the Hafod Social Value Project Fund, this event combined practical recycling support with a social afternoon tea designed to promote inclusion, connection and awareness of wider community services.
Planning & Coordination
Preparations for the second event followed a similar structure to the first. LivGreen and Hafod developed clear communication for residents, arranged food deliveries for the afternoon tea, and produced educational materials to support better recycling habits. Recycling storage boxes, magnets, posters and vouchers were prepared to help residents manage their household waste more effectively. Recognising that some residents would be unable to attend in person, both teams agreed that a door-to-door approach would be taken to ensure that everyone, including those with mobility challenges, could still participate and feel included.
Event Delivery
The Recycling Support and Afternoon Tea event was held on 12 November 2025. A welcoming communal space was created where residents could enjoy refreshments while learning more about recycling practices and local waste systems. This informal environment encouraged conversation, questions and shared experiences between neighbours.
A key feature of the day was the effort to reach less mobile residents. LivGreen and Hafod visited homes individually, delivering afternoon tea and providing the same recycling information offered in the communal area. This ensured that no one was excluded and helped strengthen relationships with residents who may otherwise have limited engagement opportunities.
During the event, the team also promoted Hafod’s Databank and Minimum Digital Living Standard projects. Awareness-raising proved successful, resulting in four new referrals being made on the day, further extending the long-term support available to residents.
Community Impact
The event offered a valuable blend of environmental education and social connection. Residents gained a greater understanding of how to manage their recycling effectively, and those receiving recycling storage boxes were able to keep their waste tidy, dry and organised. The afternoon tea encouraged people to come together, reducing feelings of isolation and supporting a sense of community belonging. One resident summed up the value of the event simply, saying, “It’s good to have these community days to help keep everything clean and tidy.”
Conclusion
The Recycling Support and Afternoon Tea event demonstrated how sustainability initiatives can also strengthen community wellbeing. By creating an inclusive and supportive environment, LivGreen and Hafod delivered an experience that improved recycling knowledge, enhanced social connection and ensured vulnerable residents were fully included. The success of the event reflects LivGreen’s dedication to delivering meaningful social value and supporting communities beyond retrofit works.
