Case Study: Golden Lane

Case study

Golden Lane Housing

Funding Stream: SHDF Wave 2.2

Contract Value: £1m

Properties: 55

Locations: Brighton, Southampton, Bristol, Midlands, NE

Measures: Solar PV, ASHP, Loft.

Challenges Faced:

  • All of the residents had learning difficulties/autism meaning we had to adopt a new approach to resident engagement.
  • All installs had to be coordinated with the residents being out of the property
  • Clear/Detailed Project Packs and documents were left in the home in case the carer changed.
  • All communication was via the carer with our scheduling team to then explain the works to the resident
  • All visits to the properties were attended by Golden Lane Housing.
  • Complex houses, for example 7 bedroom house with 3 separate residents.

Bromford Flagship

Funding Stream: SHDF Wave 2.1

Contract Value: £2m

Properties: 82 + 34 (from their other contractor)

Measures: Solar PV, ASHPs, EWI and Reroofing

Challenges Faced:

  • We were brought into the programme at a late stage in November 2024, with just a few months remaining in the delivery window. Despite this, we successfully mobilised and began works on site by January 2025, completing all installations, including Solar PV, ASHPs, EWI, and reroofing by the end of March.
  • Key to this rapid turnaround was early in-person collaboration between our team and the client, where we collectively identified risks and agreed on a streamlined delivery approach. Our site-based project managers worked closely with the client’s neighbourhood teams, conducting door-knocking to improve resident access and minimise delays. This experience demonstrates our ability to mobilise quickly and deliver under tight deadlines something we understand will also be critical for future WH:SHF projects.

Stonewater

Funding Stream: SHDF Wave 2.1

Contract Value: £5,000,000.00

Properties: 320

Measures: Solar PV, ASHP, Loft Insulation, Cavity Wall Insulation, HHRSH.

Challenges Faced

  • Disengaged residents due to previous bad experience with another contractor. LG brought in On-Site Liaison to improve comms between parties and held localised resident days/events.
  • Held training sessions on ASHPs alongside Valliant to build confidence prior to install.
  • Comprehensive ASHP Handbook produced for residents, as well as post visit from our technical ASHP engineer to explain the system and train up the resident (Often required 2-3 visits per resident)
At Nash Close, this reroofing project from start to finish took just over 7 weeks to complete, ensuring the resident was kept as comfortable and informed as possible through out.

SHDF Wave 2.1

Units: 27 sheltered housing units across 6 two-story blocks
Upgrades: Full re-roofing with solar PV, External Wall Insulation (EWI), Cavity Wall Insulation (CWI) extraction/refill, triple-glazed windows/doors, ventilation system upgrades
Materials Installed: 320 windows, 125 doors, 3,600 sqm of EWI insulation

While these upgrades significantly improved energy efficiency, the true impact came from how we engaged the Maesteg community.

Resident Handover Event: More Than a Milestone

The completion of the first phase of the Maesteg project culminated in a special Resident Handover event. This event wasn’t just about marking construction progress, it was an opportunity to celebrate the strong relationship we had built with the residents throughout the project.

As a gesture of appreciation for the residents' patience and collaboration, LivGreen proudly made a financial donation to the Maesteg community, empowering them to decide how best to use the funds. Additionally, in response to their feedback, we provided a defibrillator for the community, an important resource that adds long-term value to their well-being.

Resident Engagement: The Heart of the Project

Throughout the project, we prioritised open communication with residents. By listening to their feedback and addressing concerns, we ensured the work was responsive to their needs, minimising disruption and building trust. This two-way dialogue is essential to how we work, helping us continuously improve and tailor our approach.

Conclusion

The Maesteg project was about more than just installing energy-efficient solutions, it was about creating stronger, more connected communities. By focusing on resident engagement, we ensured that the benefits of this project go beyond sustainability to truly improve lives.
