The Big Clean-Up at Heol Ty Maen: LivGreen and Hafod Community Initiative

  • LivGreen

Overview

As part of LivGreen’s ongoing commitment to delivering measurable social value alongside our retrofit work, we partnered with Hafod to support two major community initiatives in line with our Social Value pledge. These activities formed part of the Hafod Social Value Project Fund, a £1,000 contribution from LivGreen, allocated across two environmental community events designed to strengthen community spirit, improve local environments, and support residents with practical resources.

1. Background & Funding Allocation

LivGreen’s Social Value Lead met with Hafod’s Community Engagement Manager to review and confirm available funding options. To ensure that the funding reached the communities that needed it most, Hafod launched an internal bid competition.

Community Managers across Hafod were invited to submit proposals detailing how they would use their £500 allocation. Two regions were selected, each working closely with LivGreen to plan and deliver a community-focused event:

  • Event 1: The Big Clean-Up – 30 October 2025

  • Event 2: Recycling Support & Afternoon Tea – 12 November 2025

Overview

As part of LivGreen’s ongoing Social Value pledge, we partnered with Hafod to deliver an environmental improvement event at Heol Ty Maen. This initiative formed part of the Hafod Social Value Project Fund, through which £500 was allocated to support residents in tackling long-standing waste issues, reducing local rat activity and encouraging a cleaner, more connected community. The Big Clean-Up was designed not only to improve the physical environment but also to bring neighbours together and inspire long-term community ownership.

Planning & Preparation

In the weeks prior to the event, LivGreen and Hafod worked closely to coordinate every element of the day. Resident letters were produced to ensure the community understood the purpose of the event and what was available. A 7-yard skip was arranged with a supplier who agreed to both deliver and collect it on the same day to prevent fly-tipping or misuse. Litter pickers, Halloween-themed activity packs, posters, and prizes were sourced to support participation from families and younger residents. The team also prepared for poor weather by organising a gazebo and ensuring additional cover was available. A dedicated LivGreen team was assembled to work alongside Hafod colleagues and provide support throughout the day.

Event Delivery

The Big Clean-Up took place on 30 October 2025 and brought together residents, LivGreen staff and Hafod’s community team. Seventeen households made use of the skip, clearing garden waste, bulky items and general clutter that had accumulated over time. LivGreen supported residents in moving these items and encouraged everyone to participate in litter picking across the wider area. A community food stall offering everyday essentials created a welcoming atmosphere and encouraged engagement throughout the day.

Children were invited to dress up in Halloween costumes while joining in the litter picking, and each received a seasonal treat bag for their efforts. A community raffle also took place, with residents entering their names for the chance to win a recycling storage unit to help keep their waste organised and protected from the weather.

Community Impact

The event had an immediate environmental impact, with the removal of large quantities of waste helping to address the rat issues reported by residents. It also strengthened community ties. One resident commented, “Neighbours have to work together to make a community. I’ve lived here for 25 years and met people today for the first time. Something as simple as sorting out the rubbish is bringing people together.” This sense of connection and shared responsibility became one of the most significant outcomes of the day.
