Unlock the Power of Resident Engagement in Retrofit Projects: 5 Steps to Success

  • Ella Wells

When it comes to retrofitting homes for energy efficiency, one critical element often gets overlooked—Resident Engagement. Many projects focus heavily on the technical aspects, neglecting the human side of the process. However, engaging with residents from the outset can significantly influence your project’s success. Here’s are LivGreen’ top 5 tips for engaging residents as part of Retrofit projects.

Begin with Transparent Communication

Start your retrofit journey by clearly communicating the goals, benefits, and potential disruptions to the residents. This isn’t just about sending a leaflet; it’s about opening a dialogue. Host informational sessions or community meetings where residents can ask questions and express their concerns. This step can be tailored to demographic for optimal engagement. For example, explain how retrofitting will lower their energy bills, improve comfort, and reduce their carbon footprint. Use straightforward language to make the technical aspects accessible, ensuring everyone understands the project’s value. An older demographic may prefer in person events as opposed to virtual or online sessions.

Action Step: Organise a neighbourhood meeting before the project begins. Prepare a presentation that clearly outlines the benefits and timeline in simple, easy-to-understand terms.

Build Trust Through Early Engagement

Engaging residents before any work begins is crucial. LivGreen recently hosted a Pre-Work Engagement Event in Ty Bryncoch, Cardiff, where residents were invited to meet the project team, ask questions, and enjoy some tea and treats. This early engagement helps establish trust and sets a positive tone for the entire project.

Action Step: Plan a pre-work event to introduce your team and gather initial feedback. Make it informal and welcoming—consider offering refreshments and creating a relaxed atmosphere.

Address Concerns Proactively

During the retrofitting process, disruptions like noise, dust, and restricted access are inevitable. The key is to manage these issues proactively. Regularly update residents on what to expect and when. If something goes wrong, address it immediately. Having a dedicated liaison or project team to handle resident queries can make a world of difference.

Action Step: Establish a communication channel, such as a dedicated phone line or email address, where residents can voice their concerns and receive timely responses.

Celebrate Milestones Together

Once the project is complete, don’t just pack up and leave—celebrate the success with the community. LivGreen’s Project Completion Event in Maesteg, Caerphilly, is a great example. We not only reflected on the project’s successes but also made donations to the community, showing gratitude and reinforcing our commitment to the local area.

Action Step: Host a completion event to celebrate the project’s success. Consider giving back to the community with a donation or a useful gift, like LivGreen’s donation of a defibrillator.

Encourage Long-Term Engagement

Resident engagement shouldn’t end when the project does. Engaged residents are more likely to adopt and maintain new technologies, becoming advocates for sustainability in their communities. Provide residents with the tools and knowledge they need to continue the journey towards energy efficiency.

Action Step: Create a resident-specific handover pack that includes tips on using and maintaining new technologies, as well as information on how they can further reduce their carbon footprint. The installation of a monitoring tool can also provide invaluable evidence for analysis. In a previous project, humidity monitoring following ventilation work revealed results that were not as expected. This evidence allowed us to investigate further and identify that additional work was required due to resident-specific behaviour, enabling us to adjust and correct the issue effectively.

By following these five steps, you can ensure that your retrofit project not only succeeds but also leaves a lasting positive impact on the community. Start by communicating transparently, engage early, address concerns proactively, celebrate successes, and encourage long-term participation. When residents feel valued and informed, they’re more likely to support and champion the changes, ensuring a smoother process and a more sustainable future for all.

LivGreen's Testimony

The first event, a Project Completion Event in Maesteg, Caerphilly, celebrated the successful conclusion of a major retrofit project. Residents gathered to reflect on the project's successes and discuss areas for future improvement. To show gratitude to the community for welcoming LivGreen into their lives, donations of £250 were made, and a defibrillator was gifted to the local area—demonstrating a commitment not just to sustainability but also to community well-being.

Meanwhile, in Ty Bryncoch, Cardiff, LivGreen hosted a Pre-Work Engagement Event with a warm and inviting atmosphere, complete with tea and sweet treats. This gathering offered residents the opportunity to meet the LivGreen team, ask questions, and establish trust before the retrofitting work began. This proactive approach fosters open communication and ensures residents feel comfortable and informed as LivGreen prepares to enhance their homes.

These events reflect LivGreen’s dedication to putting people first in its mission to create sustainable, energy-efficient communities across the UK.
