A discussion of paramount importance took place on delivering net zero, affordable new homes and the impact on the supply chain, amongst other key issues.

A few weeks ago, the Executive Director of LivGreen and Ventro, Harvey Melvin visited CHIC for a Roundtable discussion with Marcus Jones MP, the new Minister for Housing and Planning at the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities.

At the roundtable discussion, there were senior representatives from the affordable housing sector, CHIC members (social housing landlords) and CHIC’s supply chain partners (contractors, consultants, merchants, and manufacturers) all meeting with the Minister for the first time.

Key topics discussed:
  • Delivering affordable new homes – meeting demand and embracing MMC
  • Cost of living increases and the impact on tenants’ housing and heating costs
  • Inflation and the impact on the supply chain and construction costs
  • Delivery net zero – investment and regeneration at scale
  • Sector recruitment – making the construction and the housing sector an attractive career option
Currently, a topic of extreme importance to the sector is the Social Housing Decarbonisation Funding, Wave 2. This roundtable discussion has allowed both contractors and social landlords to present experiences in what we see and what needs changing in the industry to make a difference and achieve Net Zero by 2050. It is fantastic to see this involvement and understanding from government level on the impacts and pressures on the social housing sector and how they can help us achieve goals and tackle any obstructions along the way.

It is crucial that housing providers make full use of the Wave 2 funding available; at LivGreen, we have set up a dedicated team of consultants to assist and offer support to Housing Associations and Local Authorities in their Wave 2 bid submission. As specialist contractors, our teams can offer advice on lessons learnt from Wave 1 and support with accurate pricing.
Included in this service is:
  • The ability to carry out EPC/PAS 2035 Retrofit Assessments Immediately
  • Bid Structuring and Writing Assistance at no cost
  • Advice and learnings from Wave 1 projects
  • Provide accurate pricing
Throughout the day there were plenty of challenges raised by the attendees to the MP and discussed as a whole how they currently affect our industry and suggestions to meet them. It was a great opportunity to hear from the Minister, what the government is planning along with the opportunity to provide feedback and input to future policies as we seek to deliver on zero carbon demands within the housing sector.
