FAQs
What is Retrofit?
Retrofit is the process of making substantial energy-efficient upgrades or modifications to existing buildings or homes with the primary goal of achieving net-zero Carbon emissions.
When referring to retrofit there are two approaches that you will hear people talk about: ‘Fabric First' and 'Whole Home'.
What is Fabric First?
Fabric First is a straightforward approach which is aimed at improving the fabric components like the walls, lofts and floors of the building first. This ensures that the correct amount of ventilation is there before looking at the more complex parts of the building such as heating, hot water and lighting. There is not much point in having a brand-new heating source installed if the insulation isn’t keeping the heat in and cold out.

What is Whole House?
Whole House is an assessment which is carried out by a qualified Retrofit Professional on the whole house, including the fabric (walls, lofts), services and systems (heating, lighting and hot water) and the energy used. As every household is different, this assessment will consider how the occupants live and use their home, along with any other circumstances that may affect the dwelling.

Why do we need it?
The UK Government’s target is to tackle Climate Change and reach net zero by 2050. As a country, we are all aware of the changes that need to be made to reduce our energy consumption and the emissions we produce. UK homes use 35% of all energy in the UK and emit 20% of carbon dioxide emissions. Therefore, it is crucial that we reduce these wherever possible.
In the current climate, energy prices are rising and are likely to continue. Actioning and completing the measures that reduce the amount of energy will not only help reduce emissions but also lower household energy bills.
The introduction of these measures can help make homes warmer, more comfortable and healthier environments to live in. Studies and reports from WHO, NHS, Universities and Parliamentary Groups have all highlighted the impact of cold, damp and mould as well as poor air quality on health.

What is Resident Engagement?
At LivGreen, Resident Engagement is central to our approach as we understand the concerns that come with home improvement projects.
Our Customer Liaison team works very closely with residents throughout the project lifecycle, maintaining transparent communication channels, provides regular updates and seeking feedback.
Through our pre and post project Resident Engagement events, we provide residents with all the information they need to understand what will be happening to their homes during retrofit projects as well as a chance for everyone to meet and recognise who will be working within their environment.
For more information, visit our ‘Resident Engagement’ page on our website.
How long will the work take?
This will vary on the size of the home and what’s required. A Customer Liaison Officer (CLO) will discuss this with residents and help them to prepare for the upcoming work.
Do resident(s) have to stay at home while the work is taking place?
Its completely down to the resident(s). Some work will be noisy and/or dusty so they may prefer to spend time elsewhere, but they don’t have to leave their home.
What happens if the resident(s) cannot be at home during the work?
We recommend the resident(s) stay at home during the work but if they are unable to, its best to speak to their CLO to agree a more suitable time.
Can children be left unsupervised at home while the work is being completed?
We can only work in resident(s) homes if someone over 18 years old is present. External work can be completed whether they are at home or not.
Can animals be present during the works?
If we are working in the resident(s) home, we would recommend that their pets are kept in a separate room to keep them safe.
Will the contractor pack up the residents’ belongings before work starts?
Sometimes it may be necessary to move personal items and furniture when carrying out work, but this will be discussed with the resident(s) as we understand that each home is different.
