The Importance of Resident Engagement in Retrofit

An often overlooked but essential consideration when delivering retrofit at scale is resident engagement. Incorporating the voices of residents into the planning and execution phases of a retrofit project is key to smooth project delivery. Resident engagement is as much about listening and receiving feedback as it is informing and educating residents.

By proactively communicating expectations and benefits, LivGreen aims to foster trust and cooperation, making the experience more manageable for everyone involved. Our confidence in this strategy is bolstered by the feedback we actively seek through resident engagement days. Held at the project's completion, these events celebrate the collaborative effort and provide a platform for residents to share their thoughts, feelings, and concerns about the work undertaken. These insights are invaluable, offering a clear understanding of what worked well and what areas need improvement.

A successful resident engagement strategy starts with clear and transparent communication. This involves educating residents about the benefits of retrofitting, such as reduced energy bills, improved comfort, and a smaller carbon footprint. Informational sessions, interactive resident engagement events and resident specific handover packs can be utilised to explain the technical aspects in an accessible manner. By demystifying the process, residents are more likely to support and actively participate in the retrofitting efforts.

Moreover, resident engagement can help mitigate disruptions during the retrofitting process. Temporary inconveniences such as noise, dust, and restricted access are inevitable, but when residents are kept informed and their concerns are addressed promptly, the overall experience is more positive. Establishing a liaison or a dedicated project team to handle resident queries and feedback can be instrumental in maintaining open lines of communication and trust.

The benefits of resident engagement extend beyond the completion of retrofitting projects. Engaged residents are more likely to adopt and maintain new technologies, such as smart thermostats or energy-efficient appliances. They become advocates for sustainability within their communities, spreading awareness and encouraging others to embrace eco-friendly practices.

Retrofitting homes presents an opportunity to improve living conditions whilst also reducing the carbon footprint of residents and their properties. By actively engaging residents throughout the process, LivGreen streamline the delivery process ensuring that more homes can benefit from sustainable solutions that are not only energy-efficient but deeply connect with the people they serve.

LivGreen has recently made strides in resident engagement by hosting two distinct community events in South Wales, reinforcing its commitment to transparency, collaboration, and appreciation.

The first event, a Project Completion Event in Maesteg, Caerphilly, celebrated the successful conclusion of a major retrofit project. Residents gathered to reflect on the project's successes and discuss areas for future improvement. To show gratitude to the community for welcoming LivGreen into their lives, donations of £250 were made, and a defibrillator was gifted to the local area—demonstrating a commitment not just to sustainability but also to community well-being.

Meanwhile, in Ty Bryncoch, Cardiff, LivGreen hosted a Pre-Work Engagement Event with a warm and inviting atmosphere, complete with tea and sweet treats. This gathering offered residents the opportunity to meet the LivGreen team, ask questions, and establish trust before the retrofitting work began. This proactive approach fosters open communication and ensures residents feel comfortable and informed as LivGreen prepares to enhance their homes.

These events reflect LivGreen’s dedication to putting people first in its mission to create sustainable, energy-efficient communities across the UK.
